I drove the six-speed, 2.2-litre HDi diesel sport saloon model, and where the law permits (not here, for sure) the 170 bhp will reach 139 mph and do 0-60 in just 8.7 seconds, more importantly, thanks to the six-speed 'box and a peak torque of 217 Nm, a healthy mid-range response is seldom far away. The 407's sheer driveability almost lifts it into a league of its own, the handling, road holding and ride-quality are class leading, the 2.2 litre engine is smooth, quiet and nicely balanced especially for motorway cruising, where no doubt most 407’s will spend their infant years, zipping to appointments. Fuel consumption is pretty good too in urban driving you get around 34.8 mpg and on a combined driving cycle you get 46.3 mpg. The 407 has remarkable levels of grip even when pushed hard and it is relatively difficult to under steer. However, if you do overstep the mark the 407 is equipped with ESP (electronic stability programme). Also the traction control (ASR) and the dynamic stability control (DSC) systems can be switched off for starting on slippery road surfaces, but automatically re-activates when the car exceeds 30mph. Emergency brake assist (EBA) the activation of which is controlled automatically according to the vehicle speed, is also a standard fitment, all these safety features are designed to assist the driver in maintaining control during acceleration, cornering and avoidance manoeuvres.
Comfort is not an issue as the front seats are deep and firm and fully adjustable, the steering wheel is adjustable for height and reach enabling you to attain the perfect driving position. Access to the rear is reasonable but the headroom and legroom is limited for tallish passengers. A large boot will carry enough overnight luggage for four people. The quality of the interior is very good and the car seems well put together. The array of controls and switchgear is a bit ‘busy’ and initially takes time to find what button or switch does what. On a practical level Peugeot have incorporated a wealth of thoughtful interior features including cruise control with speed limiter, electric folding door mirrors, electrically operated and heated door mirrors, one-touch electric front windows with anti pinch feature. Automatic headlamps, automatic rain sensing front wipers, electrochrome rear view mirror, boot net, interior boot light door sill illumination, front & rear door storage bins, front and rear interior courtesy lights, front centre armrest with storage compartment and retractable cup holder and rear centre armrest with storage compartment, 2 cup holder recesses and a lockable glovebox.
Peugeot have done an excellent job with the exterior and interior design of the 407 creating a beautiful looking car that stands out from the crowd. The Peugeot 407 is destined to be the car in which every rep would like to be seen
