Renault Twingo

With a neat, modern profile and sporty styling details, Twingo looks every bit the chic city car. Easy to handle and fun to drive, Twingo revels in its compact dimensions. Gently flared wheel arches, chunky bumpers and silver surrounds to the fog lights add to the modern aspect. The wheel-in-every-corner, layout means a surprising amount of interior space and improved stability.

There are two versions of the new Twingo; the Dynamique and the GT the difference between the two is mainly cosmetic; Standard Dynamique equipment includes brushed aluminium instrument surrounds, a pod style rev-counter on the steering column, a smart carbon injected dashboard, front fog lights, Sports body styling kit, alloy wheels, CD and radio system, electric front windows, remote central locking, four airbags and anti-lock braking. The GT model has additional items such as leather steering wheel and gear knob, manual air conditioning, automatic wipers and headlights, which are of the ‘see-me-home’ variety, electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors, GT-branded door sills and sports suspension. There are several additional extra cost option packs so the Twingo can be tailored to fit the customer’s required specification.

The Twingo also offers good interior space it is not too cramped unlike so many other small cars. The two clever independent rear seats have a sliding arrangement that allows them to be pushed back into part of the load area to give more legroom for rear seat passengers. With the rear seats pushed forward to increase the load area size and folded down load capacity increases to 959 litres.

It is generally a relaxed environment in which to travel with limited engine and road noise. The power steering makes for easy parking and there’s plenty of feedback on the move. The four-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol engine with its turbocharger is quite a gem and one of the best reasons to buy a Twingo in GT form. It is strong with lots of low-down pull. It is quick as well with an impressive top speed of 117mph and 0-62mph takes just 9.8 seconds. Matched to a five-speed close ratio manual gearbox it will drive happily at 30mph in fifth gear in town traffic without any problem and it picks up readily to overtake slower traffic. Overall I’d say the Twingo GT is an accomplished car to drive rather than an out-and-out fun car. For those owners wanting to get from A to B without any fuss in a smart looking car and at a competitive price the Twingo will fit the bill.
