Peugeot Boxer U-Tail

One vehicle many uses

This year at the CV Operators Show the centrepiece of the Peugeot stand was an innovative concept which demonstrates how a flexible modular transport and storage system can be added to a Boxer chassis cab. With many modern van fleet operators running a variety of different vehicles to enable them to undertake the many different roles expected of them.

Now Roadload have created an innovative conversion based on the Peugeot Boxer which enables a single base vehicle to undertake a range of roles. A converted vehicle can now be either a standard box van or a tipper, simply by changing the rear load module. The Roadload U-tail is based on a standard 3.5 tonne Peugeot Boxer van which is modified to enable it to accommodate a special removable rear load module.

This innovative design of the vehicle also eliminates the need for a rear tail lift or ramps for loading, making it easier and safer. The rear load module lowers within the footprint of the vehicle, reducing the space needed for loading and unloading. The use of a standard 3.5 tonne Boxer van also means that any driver can drive the vehicle and that there is no need for a tachograph or an operator’s license.

The standard box option, at 3.6 x 1.7 x 2.1m, provides over 11 m3 of carrying space with vertical sides and an unobstructed rectangular floor for a payload of up to 1.1 tonnes. The box can be lowered to ground level or raised to the driving position in about five seconds and does not need to be moved during loading, so the box can be loaded or unloaded as easily as walking in and out of a room.

The Roadload U-tail is fitted with hydraulically operated lifting arms which enable empty detachable boxes to be dropped off for loading while pre-loaded boxes are picked up for delivery. Cameras provide the driver with accurate alignment assistance for box pick-up. A universal multi-use vehicle, the Roadload U-tail carries its load between two side frames with no rear axle providing a flexible space with almost 1.5 tonnes of carrying capacity.

This can be used for the standard box or can just as easily carry a deck, a specially configured emergency unit, a mobile workshop and many other loads. A tipper unit is also being developed to allow full functionality for ground care and other applications. The use of the vehicle can be changed with the seasons or in response to changing requirements. For examples boxes can be prepared for different emergencies while the vehicle is used for daily operations. In the event of an emergency the correct response unit can be picked up within minutes and taken to where it is needed.

The load sits lower than on conventional 3.5 tonne vans, providing a smoother ride, less air resistance and reduces the overall height of the vehicle. The semi-air suspension on the rear wheels further smoothes the ride for excellent handling and protection for delicate loads. The 3.5 tonne GVW chassis can do many of the jobs currently requiring 7.5 tonne GVW trucks, allowing access where space is limited, providing better economy and tachograph free driving. A 4 tonne GVW option is also possible where tachograph is not an issue.

Its unique modular design, and the removable load, provide easy access to all components for maintenance and support cost effective repair or replacement of the modules in the event of accidents. The Roadload U-tail is an innovative approach relevant to all organisations needing fast, safe, loading and provides a level of flexibility for vehicle deployment unseen in other vehicle conversions which was unveiled at the Commercial Vehicle Show at the NEC, on the Peugeot Stand.
